Good Bye, See you Soon, Can I?
The basis of this piece is a visual representation of all aspects of nature that are part of my life. As I often find myself between Santa Cruz and Savannah, I wonder if my childhood home will remain the same as I left it. Am I the same? Will my family and friends change? A large part of my conscience knows that the inevitable will happen and change is constant.
During the Summer of 2020 the mountains and trees where I’ve spent my whole life learning and growing and many places dear to the community of Santa Cruz went up in flames. As these ideas frequent my mind, I can’t help but think these thoughts will forever be a part of my conscience. This piece serves as an homage to the land and people who who raised me. Thank you.
This piece symbolically refers to the landscape of coastal California. I have included the motifs that most represent the land of my childhood. Waves, sand, cliffs, fields and farmland, foothills and mountains, and the bright, beautiful blue sky.
I chose copper as the warp because of its inherent grounding properties and how the softness of this particular metal holds memory and shape, similar to how my home and family has shaped me. The weft is a cotton linen blend due to its durability and softness.
